Wood Wick Care & Tips

Wood wicks burn a little differently than traditional cotton wicks — and that's part of what we love about them! A little care will help you get the best burn from your candle.

1. Do I need to trim my wood wick?

Yes! Before each burn, make sure your candle is completely cool, then gently break away the loose, blackened portion of the wick with your fingers. That's usually all the trimming it needs.

Removing that charred portion helps keep your flame clean and controlled and can prevent smoking or an overly high flame.

2. My flame looks low. Is that normal?

Yep! A lower flame, especially during the first few burns, can be completely normal.

If your candle is staying lit and continuing to melt the wax, let it burn. As the candle burns farther down into the jar, it naturally retains more heat and the flame may become a little taller.

If needed, let the candle cool completely and gently remove any loose char from the wick before relighting.

3. My flame looks too high. What should I do?

A tall flame usually means it's time to trim your wick.

Extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely, and gently break away the loose, charred portion of the wood wick before lighting it again.

Also, make sure you're not burning your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time.

4. Why is my first burn so important?

During your first few burns, give your candle enough time to create a nearly full melt pool across the surface of the wax.

For our larger candles, this can take up to 4 hours.

Giving your candle enough burn time helps encourage an even burn throughout the life of your candle.

5. Should I pour out wax if my flame seems too low?

Never pour wax out of your candle.

While it may seem like removing wax will help expose the wick, it can actually create a deeper tunnel. This can leave the wood wick sitting too far below the surface of the wax and make it difficult — or sometimes impossible — to keep lit later.

Low flame? Let it burn. Don't pour.

6. My wood wick is crackling and popping. Is that okay?

Absolutely! That soft crackle and occasional pop is completely normal with a wood wick — and one of our favorite things about them.
